2006 Birdathon a Huge Success!
Thanks to the active involvment of numerous Seattle Audubon volunteers, staff, Master Birders, board members, and generous corporate sponsors and donators, Birdathon 2006 was the most successful ever, raising $38,000! This money will support Seattle Audubon Conservation Programming, specifically the Forest Friendly Lumber Campaign and the Northwest Shade Coffee Campaign. Fundraising activies such as this are critical to the continual operation of these programs. Thanks again to everyone for their support!
Seattle Audubon staff held their birdathon on May 16-17 and in 24 hours identified 134 species across Washington state.

International Migratory Bird Day Celebrated at Woodland Park Zoo
On May 4, 2006, the Woodland Park Zoo held their annual Festival for the Birds, as part of the International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) celebration. This year's theme was "The Boreal Forest: Bird Nursery of the Americas." The boreal forest encompasses about 1.5 billion acres (5.9 million square kilometers) and stretches from Alaska to Newfoundland. This region includes one of the world's largest intact forests, offering refuge to grizzly bear, caribou, wolverine, gray wolf, and countless other species. Billions of birds representing over 270 bird species migrate from the lower 48 states, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America to the Boreal Forest, where they nest and raise their young. To help raise awareness for this important bird area, Seattle Audubon staffed two booths, including one for the Northwest Shade Coffee Campaign. New Campaign member Boreal Songbird Initiative was also present.

Bellingham Second Grade Class Studies Birds, Nature, and...Coffee!
Every year, Jan Stamey's second grade class at Geneva Elementary School in Bellingham, WA makes the connection between birds and coffee. They learn that buying shade-grown coffee allows birds to have more places to live and rest on their long migration routes. The children study various animals including coyotes, beavers, bears, squirrels, bats, frogs and birds and are involved in activities such as observing cricket and butterfly larvae, taking bird walks, and sketching birds. Through their studies, they learn that there are ways that families can help these animals survive. For example, putting up a bat box will not only give bats a place to live but will decrease the number of pesky mosquitoes that bother people. Thanks to Jan for providing such an important learning experience to Geneva Elementary School students!

Demand for Jungle Tech's Shade Coffee Grows Tremendously!
Jungle Tech's Cafe Selvanica, which is 100% shade grown, is now sold out for the next 5 years! One of the Selvanica growers within the community, Manual Cuchanaupu, won the cupping competition of the entire state of San Martin, which helped give credit to the Selvanica growers shade grown approach. To celebrate the last harvest, another NWSCC member, Fidalgo Bay Coffee Co. visited the Selvanica farmers. Thanks to both of these companies for their tremendous commitment to shade coffee.
In addition to the Café Selvanica, Jungle Tech has also had tremendous demand for another of its 100% shade coffee offerings, the Café Inkaico. At this point almost 300 farmers from 12 different villages have partnered with Jungle Tech in providing this coffee, which has been particularly important to the local farmers in an area of Peru where the alternative crop is coca. It is essential these areas remain in shade coffee production, as the alternative would result in massive deforestation. Congratulations to Jungle Tech for their great shade coffees!

Northwest Shade Coffee Campaign Reaches Out to Gardeners
The NWSCC participated in the 2003 Northwest Flower and Garden Show in downtown Seattle reaching an audience of over 50,000 people with the message of shade coffee. This was a great opportunity for the campaign to reach out to a new audience, as we drew the connection between backyard birds and shade grown coffee for gardeners ranging from beginners to professionals. The event drew a crowd from all over the Pacific Northwest, and we hope to continue to share the shade coffee message with gardeners throughout the region.
